The short answer
One symptom does not equal one diagnosis. Popping while the tank heats, shorter showers, slow reheating, no hot water, leakage, and a blocked drain valve each point to a different decision path.
Sediment can be a real part of noise, reduced usable hot water, and slow recovery. It is not a good explanation for every failure. Start with what you are actually noticing, then use the matching guide below.

Popping or rumbling while the tank heats
Sediment or mineral scale is a strong possibility when the sound happens during the heating cycle. Water can move through or beneath deposits near the heat source. A bang after a faucet or appliance shuts off is more consistent with a plumbing-pressure issue such as water hammer.

Hot water runs out sooner than it used to
Sediment can reduce the tank's effective hot-water capacity and interfere with heating. But higher household demand, an undersized tank, a thermostat problem, a damaged dip tube, a weak heating component, a leak, or a mixing problem can feel similar.

The tank takes longer to reheat
Scale and sediment can form a barrier between the heat source and the water. Recovery can also slow when incoming water is colder, demand has increased, or a thermostat, element, burner, or other component is not working correctly.

There is no hot water
Do not assume sediment is the main cause of a complete loss of heat. A shutdown, fuel or power issue, control problem, or failed heating component may be involved. Check the exact model manual for safe user-level observations and use qualified service for gas, combustion, wiring, breaker, or internal component work.
Water is leaking or collecting around the tank
Cleaning is not the next step until the source is identified. Moisture can come from a fitting, drain valve, relief discharge, condensation, or the tank itself. Active leakage, significant corrosion, or water from the relief system deserves prompt professional evaluation.
The drain valve is blocked, damaged, or leaking
Do not force a blocked valve or improvise with pressure, wires, or tools. Sediment can obstruct the drain path, but the valve or tank connection may also be damaged. Use the model manual and a qualified plumber before proceeding.
What routine maintenance should cover
A useful maintenance plan begins with the model number and current manual. Tank, tankless, gas, electric, and heat-pump water heaters do not share one universal procedure or calendar.
For a tank-style unit, the plan may include:
- watching for leakage, corrosion, relief discharge, new noise, and changing hot-water performance;
- flushing or sediment removal at the interval and in the manner the manufacturer specifies;
- checking the drain valve and surrounding connections before and after maintenance; and
- having the anode, relief system, heating system, combustion system, or other model-specific components inspected by the appropriate person.

Where active sediment removal fits
Routine flushing is passive. Water and mobile particles must find the drain path and pass through the installed valve and hose. That can work well for loose material and regular maintenance, but settled chunks, compacted deposits, and hard scale may not move with water alone.

Call a professional before continuing when
- the tank or a connection is actively leaking;
- significant corrosion is visible;
- the temperature-and-pressure relief system is discharging or suspect;
- the drain valve is blocked, damaged, or leaking;
- the unit has no heat or operates unpredictably;
- persistent hissing or sizzling has no clearly harmless source; or
- gas, combustion, pressure, electrical, shutdown, or restart work is outside your experience.
