Why Is My Water Heater Popping or Rumbling?

The short answer
If a tank-style water heater pops or rumbles while it is heating, sediment or mineral scale near the bottom is a common possible cause. Water can become trapped beneath or move through those deposits, creating bubbling, popping, or rumbling sounds as the burner or heating elements warm the tank.
The sound alone does not prove sediment is responsible. A bang after a faucet or appliance shuts off can be water hammer. Hissing, sizzling, visible moisture, pressure-relief discharge, or a sudden loud change deserves a different response.
Start with when the sound happens
Popping or rumbling during the heating cycle
This pattern most strongly points toward sediment or scale. Bradford White describes rumbling, bubbling, surging, or boiling sounds when water moves through formations near the bottom of a tank. Rheem likewise lists popping and rumbling among common sediment-related noises in tank-style units.

The buildup does not have to look like fine mud. It can include loose particles, flakes, compacted material, and hard mineral scale. That uneven layer helps explain why the sound can become more noticeable as a neglected tank heats.
A bang when a faucet, washer, or valve closes
That pattern is more consistent with water hammer than sediment inside the tank. Fast-moving water stops suddenly and the pressure wave makes the plumbing bang. A plumber can evaluate pressure, pipe support, and water-hammer arrestors.
Hissing, sizzling, dripping, or visible moisture
Do not assume these sounds are ordinary sediment noise. They can involve leakage, condensation, pressure, the temperature-and-pressure relief system, or a component problem. Turn to the exact model manual and get qualified help if the source is uncertain.
Why sediment can make a tank rumble
In a gas water heater, the burner heats the tank from below. Deposits along the bottom can create pockets where water bubbles through or beneath the buildup. In an electric tank, scale can collect around heating elements and contribute to hissing or other heating-cycle sounds.
The simple version is: the heating system is trying to transfer heat through deposits instead of directly into freely circulating water. That can make the tank noisier, but it does not tell you how much buildup is present or whether another component also needs attention.
Does rumbling mean the water heater is failing?
Not automatically. A noisy tank may need maintenance rather than replacement. The age and condition of the tank still matter.
Look for the bigger picture:
- Is the sound new, louder, or happening more often?
- Does it happen only while the burner or elements are heating?
- Is hot water running out sooner or taking longer to recover?
- Is there leakage, corrosion, relief-valve discharge, or unreliable heating?
- Has the tank gone years without model-recommended maintenance?
Noise plus leakage, significant corrosion, pressure concerns, gas or electrical trouble, or an obstructed drain valve is a reason to stop and call a qualified professional.
What to do next
Check the manual before opening anything
Find the water heater's model number and current manual. Follow its shutdown, cooling, draining, refilling, and restart instructions. Hot water can scald, and restoring power to an unfilled electric tank can damage the heating elements.
Understand what routine flushing can do
Periodic flushing can remove loose material that reaches the drain path. It is useful maintenance, especially before deposits become heavily settled or hardened.
But flushing is passive: water and mobile particles must travel out through the stock drain valve. If the tank still rumbles after a proper model-approved flush, remaining buildup may be too settled, too firmly attached, poorly positioned, or unable to pass through the valve easily.

Common questions
Can sediment make a water heater sound like popcorn?
Yes. Popping, crackling, bubbling, or rumbling during the heating cycle can be consistent with water moving through mineral deposits. The timing matters because other plumbing and component problems can create different noises.
Will flushing stop the popping noise?
It may reduce the sound when loose material can reach and pass through the drain path. A routine flush may not remove settled chunks or hardened scale, so the sound can remain or return.
